Abstract

Premature infants often experience delays in the development of oral feeding skills due to neuromuscular immaturity and coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing. One emerging intervention is the Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention (PIOMI), which aims to stimulate the oral muscles to accelerate the transition to independent oral feeding. This scoping review aims to determine the PIOMI intervention in efforts to optimize oral feeding in premature infants. Methods: Literature sources were obtained through the PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for articles published between 2020 and 2024. Inclusion criteria included primary articles with a quasi-experimental design, RCTs, or observational studies evaluating PIOMI in premature infants. Articles were screened and extracted independently by two researchers. Results: The PIOMI intervention was generally given for 5 consecutive days, 5 minutes per session, and was carried out by nurses or therapists. The most consistent results showed an increase in the NNS (non-nutritive sucking) score, accelerated transition time to oral feeding, and shortened hospital stay. The researchers concluded that PIOMI is an intervention
